Nothing beats traveling in Europe in your own RV!

We've done just that twice and plan to make another trip in 2005. Click on our map to see where we've been so far. Using our own experiences, we've tried to show just how exciting, comfortable and inexpensive this unique way of traveling is, and to encourage our readers to think about making a similar trip.  We explain the entire process from beginning to end, touching on all aspects of visiting Europe with an RV.

After the Introduction, the chapters are:

  • New Uses for Your RV... discusses the "problems" we initially thought might arise and explains what we found and how we dealt with those "problems"
  • Strangers RV'ing in a Strange Land... describes some of the wonderful things we have seen and people we have met on our trips.  Click on "Letters" to read excerpts of the letters that we sent home describing these experiences.
  • Figuring out the costs... for comparisons between renting an RV, buying one in Europe, shipping your own and the traditional ways of traveling as well as for fuel consumption and everyday living.  We provide charts and worksheets so that you can get an idea of what such a trip could cost you.
  • Preparing the RV for Europe... including not only the mechanics and the engine, but the electrical system, special storage areas etc.
  • Getting Ready for the Trip... discusses money, health and vehicular insurance, maps, important papers, and preparations necessary on the home front when leaving home for a long time.
  • The Shipping Process... takes you through the process of shipping your RV, step by step.
  • On the Road... explains about the highway systems, road signs, ferries, and fuel.  It also has capsule descriptions of driving rules in different countries.
  • The Campground Scene... from finding campgrounds to dealing with electricity, propane, water, descriptions of the sanitary facilities, security, amenities and public transit in Europe.
  • Staying in Touch... discusses the ways to stay in touch with home and family.
  • Shopping & Eating Your Way Through Europe... our personal guide to one of the best parts of being in an RV in Europe - the wonderful food that you can experience since you will have your own cooking facilities when wanted.
  • European Horizons Unlimited... contains both a general guide and specific information about the various countries.
  • To Be Continued... discusses storage, shipping home and other last questions.

The Appendices include the letters we sent home during our two European trips.   You can read the excerpts from some of our letters here.   Another appendix contains information about 17 countries from Austria to the United Kingdom.

Also in the Appendices there is a list of ports on both sides of the Atlantic and a selection of campgrounds near the ports.  The list of suppliers includes freight forwarders, insurance providers, shipping companies, camping clubs, some storage facilities in Europe, a few suppliers of essential products for your trip, useful Internet sites, and some dealers who rent and sell RVs in Europe.  Obviously, there are many, many more companies but this will give you a start.
